C-Section on Demand?

We're happily married and are now thinking about kids. My wife will only agree to have children IF she can be guaranteed a C-Section. She doesn't want to go about it the natural way and I don't blame her. We've known so many people with complications that I support her decision 100%.

The questions is can you have your OB perform a C-Section when the time is right? Is this something you can do in the US? I have a step-sister who has had kids only by c-section, she never wanted to give birth the natural way from the get go. Her doctor didn't have a problem with it however, she doesn't live in the US. Her doctor followed her entire pregnancy and simply gave her a time frame when the C-Section could be performed.

I am not interested in answers suggesting kids born by c-section are unhealthy. That's not true.

The question is: In the US can you let your OB know you want a C-Section from the very beginning and that you don't even want to consider giving birth naturally.

Thanks

C-Section on Demand?
Yes, you can request a C-section delivery at the beginning of your pregnancy. It is happening more often that it used to in the past and some insurances do pay for this as well. As for the physician getting paid more that is not always the case. Most carriers now pay the physician the same amount for vaginal or C-section delivery. It depends on the doctors contract with the insurance company and what state he/she practices in. What you need to do is ask if your wife's ob doctor is willing to accept this request. Some physicians feel uncomfortable with birthing plans but this should be an easy question to get an answer to.
Reply:I think both you and your wife need to do some serious research before you decide to go this route. A c-section is by no means the "easy" way to have a child. You will hear over and over again that it is major abdominal surgery that involves some significant healing time. You say you are not interesting in hearing about complications with the babies, but do you and your wife consider the fact that it is significantly more dangerous for her? Her risk of complications and death are much higher with a section, and it does increase with each subsequent section.

I'm not going to say that you will not be able to get the elective section. With some searching you will certainly find a doctor who will accomodate your wishes. However, consider the fact that there is a REASON why most doctors will not agree to such a procedure. For the sake of your new child and wife, I hope that you sit down and actually read the information out there. Vaginal childbirth is not easy, and no one ever said that it is, but it is the way nature intended. Female bodies were built for this, and it is the safest method available for bringing your child into this world. Please consider it, rather than driving your heads into the sand to ignore what the well-meaning pro-vaginal-delivery folks have to say.
Reply:You're going to have to start saving up big bucks to pay for the priviledge and start shopping around to find an OB that will agree to it. I'm sure they are out there, but any good OB will tell you to go away and get your head checked.....

BTW, you and your wife do realise that a c-section is Major Abdominal Surgery and carries the risk of death? Just thought you should know that......
Reply:It's common these days, woman are will to take more risks of both mom and baby dying...Doctors don't mind though they make lots more money doing c-sections, its convenient for them too, it's like this is only gonna be 20 mins than I get to go to lunch! I had my first naturally then a c-section due to failed induction, I'd rather natural...Woman been giving birth for years and years!
Reply:No, it is agains the law to preform a c section unless its necessary. Your ob can loose his/her lisence by doing so. Tell your wife that millions and millions of women have given birth without complications. If you have a competent doctor, (most are!!!) then thre is nothing to worry about.

BTW, there are complications from c sctions too...including a very painful recovery! Natural childbirth is much easier.
Reply:SOUNDS AS IF YOUR WIFE JUST DOESN'T WANT TO GO THROUGH LABOR AND DELIVERY! TELL HER TO SUCK IT UP AND STOP BEING SO SELFISH.
Reply:yes, when she goes to her first visit, make sure you tell the doc. right away.

but away from that, you should also know that c-section have their own complications

i know that the natural way is painful, but has she considered an epidural so she wont feel anything,

besides she will heal a lot faster, with a c-section its like bad pain after wards,

but anyway good luck,
Reply:Yes you can tell your doctor that. Today, it is very common for women to schedule one. Me, I had both mine naturally and didn't have any complications. I am glad you both agree on something. But just to let you know...c-section's have their own risks and complications of its own. So you two really need to look into that too.
Reply:Your wife would be better off finding a doctor and talking to them before getting pregnant. While babies born by c-section can do great...they do have a higher likelihood of breathing complications and more interventions after the birth. This is due to the fact that they aren't "squeezed" during the birthing process, forcing the fluid out of their system....the way nature intended. I would question why she would want to have a section done. It IS major surgery and she has a higher risk of complications and recovery is longer and more painful. Not something most women would choose to deal with while trying to adjust to a newborn. Either way, she should check with a doctor first to find out for sure what their policy is.
Reply:Yes you sure can, I used to work for an OBGYN and although it was not a common request, it did happen and it was granted.

I did forget to mention one thing, since insurance only pays if it is an emergency c - section since it is so much more expensive the Doctor always made payment arrangements with those patients.
Reply:Most doectors will not do one unless there is a reason to do so, like if the baby is breech or something.
Reply:Yes she can tell her OB that she wants a c-section.
Reply:no
Reply:Yes. C-sections are increasingly common in the US. Some doctors even prefer it that way, since it fits in better with their scheduling. Sad, but true.
Reply:C/sections are meant to be performed only in emergency cases or if the baby is too large to deliver vaginally. It's major surgery, and an ethical doctor will not perform one if it's not required.

Having a c/section is NOT the easy way out, tell your wife that. As I said, it's major surgery, and the recovery period is longer and more painful.

Your wife needn't go natural... she can opt for medications. Please realize that "natural" doesn't just mean vaginal, it means vaginal without medication. Your wife can have an epidural or a spinal (or a combo)...

I had two emergency c/sections. It is definitely not easier than a vaginal birth.
Reply:yes, just make it clear from the beginning. i know that a c-section costs more.

whoever said that kids born by c-section are unhealthy??? i went through a 30 hour labour which resulted in my son being born by c-section and he is extremely healthy!!!
Reply:1 in 3 have c sections in US. It is called Elective c Section here- you will have to find an OB wiling to perform the elective c section, not all are willing, but depending on where you live there are more that are than that are not, for example in LA and NYC there is a huge portion of doctors willing to perform elective c sections- many celebrities go this route due to scheduling conflicts for example so it is deifnatly an option, just have to find a doctor.
